*48 pages explaining how to build a set play family and showing three detailed examples
There are times when it is my job as a head high school basketball coach to call out a set play so that we get the right person the right shot at key moments in a game. Remember, these aren't college players. They are 18, 17, 16, sometimes 14 or 15 year-old kids. I don't care how talented they are, sometimes they need some help, and a good "family" of set plays---or a series---is a great way to give them that help at key moments.
I learned very early in my coaching career that just about every set is a good one at the sub-varsity levels---and they are also all really good during a summer league game--because little to no scouting goes on in those situations. When it comes to the varsity level, however, I have found that a set play is only as effective as its counter actions. With that in mind, I will share ideas here that are aimed at helping coaches develop a set play into a full family of actions complete with terminology designed to defeat the scouting report.
