*100 pages of stories and strategies on basketball program building for coaches
“I cannot recommend ‘High Rise’ highly enough. As coaches, we are all trying to build the biggest and best program we can, and this book not only entertains, but outlines so many great methods to use to turn your basketball program into the biggest building on the block.”
-Coach Hack
From the Author, Coach Terry Battenberg:
In this manual, I have used chapter titles with sub-titles comparing the similarities I found in revitalizing my basketball programs to laying out an architectural plan for a building. It’s only in the titles though, so don’t be alarmed. Each section is all about basketball methods I used to transform my programs into successful ones. And I had plenty of opportunities. While most high school coaches will stay with one program for several years, then maybe try moving up once or twice, I enjoyed building up a program and then looking for new challenges. Lucky for me, I found my last seven positions all in my home area of Sacramento.
My title, “High Rise Basketball Coaching,” means we want to take a program, evaluate it and then rebuild it, so it rises above all others. Some programs don’t need much work, maybe just a little “remodeling” here and there, or an “addition” to give it more room to grow. In this manual, I give you 12 sections of information on how to accomplish successful changes in your basketball program, your players, and your future as a coach.
About the Author:
Terry Battenberg began his basketball coaching career at the age of 21 as the JV head coach at Sacramento’s Jesuit High School. One year later, he became the youngest head varsity coach in the state of California and directed the Jesuit team to a 26-2 record and a Tournament of Champions season-ending championship. After two more league title seasons, he moved to college coaching over the next 5 years, serving as an assistant to Hall of Fame Coach Ralph Miller at Oregon State University, and as the head coach at Montana Tech College. Eventually returning to California, Battenberg was an assistant and head coach at American River College, headed up five more high school programs, and served as an assistant coach at Sacramento State University during his 35 year career.
Known for building winning programs, Battenberg’s fast breaking, high scoring, and inside oriented style of play helped his high school teams win two section titles, make six other semi final appearances, and win 13 league titles over his 23 years as a high school head coach. This included at least one league title at each of five high schools where he coached.
Coach Battenberg has spoken at clinics, camps and conferences all over the United States as well as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Germany, and England. He has also found the time to write three books on Big Man development, including the first ever on that subject, The Complete Book of Basketball Post Play.
