After 3 decades in coaching—18 of those years spent as a head coach at just about every level of high school basketball—I have come to view press offense from the following three angles:
1. As an extension of our “Fire” fast break offensive attack.
2. As a chess match that matches wits with any extended defense.
3. As a high level insurance policy.
Because I have typically taught a fast-paced approach to offense, I connect everything we do with press offense to our “Fire” fastbreak approach. See, I don’t want my guys to believe they are prepared to just break the press; I want my players to feel 100% confident that they are prepared to punish the press, so much so that they truly believe the opponent is doing us a favor when they press us.
